Ms. Atkinson
I am a NY State certified Visual Art Teacher, for grades K – 12, with over 5 years of full-time teaching experience, I have a Master’s degree in Art and Art Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Pratt Institute. I am also a practicing artist, passionate about art.
My philosophy is that all kids can be successful at creating art if they find a means to express their own lived experiences with the world. This is accomplished through experimentation with various tools and materials and the development of skills. I find that my own excitement and interest in creating artwork seems to get students engaged in painting, drawing, sculpting, digital photography, printmaking, mask making, and other forms of artmaking.
Hanging student artwork up around the school, keeping a sketchbook, and visiting museums and art galleries are very important components of a visual arts education, along with experimentation and skill development. Putting student artwork on display makes students feel confident and proud of themselves and helps to make the school environment richer. It is important for students to have a sketchbook so that they can practice their drawing skills, record observations of things around them, jot down ideas, and let their imaginations thrive. Visits to museums and galleries allow students to learn from the artwork of others, be inspired, and realize the importance of art in our culture.
I love working with kids. I use my knowledge of child artistic development to help kids grow and learn based on where they are in their development. I try to provide an environment where kids feel safe and know that their artwork will be respected.
